Gor Mahia eye crucial win over Tusker as title race tightens

Africa-Press – Kenya. Leaders Gor Mahia will aim to strengthen their grip at the top of the Sportpesa League when they face Tusker FC in a high-stakes clash on Tuesday at the Wang’uru Stadium, Kirinyaga.

The record champions head into the encounter with 57 points from 26 matches, just two ahead of arch-rivals AFC Leopards, underlining the fine margins in this season’s title race.

Kakamega Homeboyz sit a distant third on 46 points, leaving the battle for top spot largely between the two traditional giants.

Despite the pressure that comes with leading the table, defender Frank Onyango has downplayed expectations, insisting the team remains focused on a game-by-game approach.

“We are not under any pressure,” said Odhiambo. “We are taking each game at a time, and that is what is helping us stay focused.”

The centre-back warned that dwelling on the title race could disrupt the team’s concentration.

“Pressure will only serve to distract me and my teammates,” he added. “We don’t need that in our dressing room.”

Odhiambo, who rejoined the club earlier this year, has quickly established himself as a key figure in the defensive setup, bringing composure and tactical discipline to the backline.

“Being on top does not mean the job is done,” he continued. “It only means we have worked hard to get here, and we must work even harder to stay.”

Looking ahead to Tuesday’s clash, the defender cautioned against underestimating Tusker despite their mid-table position.

“Tusker are a strong team despite their position,” he noted. “They have quality players who can hurt you if you relax.”

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor echoed similar sentiments, warning that the title race remains wide open.

“We are in a good position, yes, but the league is not won in April,” said Akonnor. “Every match now is like a final for us.”

The coach emphasised the need for focus and discipline against a Tusker side capable of causing an upset.

“Tusker may be mid-table, but they are not a small team,” he added. “They have experience and they can punish mistakes.”

Akonnor also highlighted Odhiambo’s growing influence within the squad.

“Frank has brought calmness and intelligence to our defence,” he said. “He reads the game very well and gives confidence to the players around him.”

Tusker, currently 10th with 37 points, head into the match seeking to revive their campaign and close the gap on the top half of the table.

Defender Tom Teka believes the fixture presents a perfect opportunity for his side to turn their season around.

“We know people are looking at the table and writing us off,” said Teka. “But football is not played on paper.”

The centre-back expressed confidence that Tusker can challenge the league leaders.

“This is the kind of game that can change our season,” he stated. “Beating Gor Mahia would give us belief again.”

Teka stressed the importance of defensive discipline against a side known for capitalising on mistakes.

“We must stay disciplined for the full 90 minutes,” he said. “One lapse against a team like Gor Mahia, and you are punished.”

He also made it clear that Tusker will approach the match with intent rather than caution.

“We are not going there to defend only,” he added. “We are going there to compete and to win.”

Tusker head coach Julien Mette maintained that his side is ready for the challenge and capable of upsetting the leaders.

“We respect Gor Mahia, but we do not fear them,” said Mette. “Every team has weaknesses, and it is our job to find them.”

The French tactician emphasised the importance of belief and execution.

“The players must believe they can win,” he noted. “If you go into a game already defeated in your mind, you have no chance.”

He also called for efficiency in key moments of the match.

“We must be efficient in both boxes,” he added. “Defend well, and when we get chances, we must take them.”

With AFC Leopards closely trailing Gor Mahia at the top and Tusker desperate to climb the standings, Tuesday’s encounter is expected to have significant implications at both ends of the table as the season enters a decisive phase.
