Homeboyz set sights on playoffs ahead of Kenya Cup season

Africa-Press – Kenya. Former Enterprise Cup champions Homeboyz have set their sight on qualifying for the Kenya Cup playoffs for the 2022 -2023 season.

Team manager Elphas Etemesi believes the team has the capacity to qualify for the season-ending semifinals after finishing eighth last season.

“In our opening game last season, we lost to KCB 16-15 and the situation persisted. We lost by very narrow margins in most of the matches and if we can build on that, then we can challenge for the playoffs,” said Etemesi.

The 2018 Enterprise Cup champions won four matches and lost seven, amassing a paltry 19 points. However, the former prop said they can double the points tally from last season.

“We have done six weeks of pre-season so far and we have four to go and the boys are slowly getting into shape. We will surprise many teams once the season begins,” he noted.

Etemesi expects cutthroat competition for the top four places and has put champions Kabras, KCB, Menengai Oilers and Strathmore Leos on notice.

“We want to tell them it won’t be business as usual. We are going to fight until the end to get into the semis and be competitive,” said Etemesi.

He added that a decision to play in the Floodlit will be done later this week by the technical bench led by coach Oscar Ayodi.

“We will know if we will play in the Impala Floodlights. If we don’t, we will play a few build-up matches to prepare for the start of the season,” added Etemesi.

The core of the team that did duty last season remains intact including the likes of Kenya Sevens star Amon Wamalwa, Joseph Amalemba, Bruce Shiemi, skipper Roy Wesonga, Mohammed Omollo, Collins Shikoli and Brian Ayimba.

The Jamhuri Park-based side last played in the Kenya Cup semis under the tutelage of Paul Murunga in 2018 when they lost to Kabras 29-13 in the semifinals and are yet to get to the playoffs for the past three seasons.
