Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has said his administration will prioritise implementation of the affordable housing project and ensure no Kenyan lives in deplorable conditions.
He said the Permanent secretary in the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga, has been tasked to ensure the project sails through.
“This is a plan that we would have implemented in 2018 but we took a tangent and focused on the BBI,” Ruto said.
The President said this will need the amendment of the law where tenants will adopt the rent-to-own plan.
He was speaking on Friday during the Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary retreat in Naivasha, Nakuru county.
The two-day session is aimed at striking a working relationship among members ahead of the opening of Parliament.
“We need to agree on the execution of that plan. We committed to people of Kenya to actualise our manifesto. Good people, we have no option but to change this country, and we are the people who are going to change it,” Ruto said.
Ruto said every arm of the Kenya Kwanza team must get everything right in Parliament.
“All our members must sing the same song, sing from the same hymn book to ensure we achieve out target,” the President said.
Towards this end, the President asked the senior legislators to guide the new and young MPs on how best to run things in and outside the house.
“Let us take time to mentor the juniors, don’t harass anyone, don’t monolise anyone. Show them how CDF works, don’t assume people know how to do stuff,”Ruto said.
“We will also be working on the review of the Standing Orders so that Cabinet Secretaries can be held to account.”
Ruto said Saturday’s session will solely focus on teaching especially the new legislators etiquette.
“Because sometimes we get embarrassed, some people don’t know how to hold a spoon or how to hold a fork,” he said, albeit on a light note.
The head of state also said the government is keen on achieving universal health coverage (UHC) as well as improve national security.
He said with the designation of the Inspector General of Police as the Accounting Officer of the National Police Service, they expect improved security and execution of issues in a timely manner.
“In the past they used to make excuses that they were depending on other people’s budgets,” Ruto said.
