Africa-Press – Kenya. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has launched investigations into the shooting to death of a middle aged man at Kakamega’s Kambi Mwanza market.
Collins Ndombi, 25, was allegedly shot dead by police officers who were pursuing a suspected thief.
Police said a mob was in the process of lynching a student at the Shamberere Technical Training Institute when an alert was sent out.
In a statement on Wednesday, IPOA chairperson Anne Makori said that a rapid response team was dispatched to the scene on Kakamega-Webuye Road where investigators reconstructed the incident and interviewed police officers.
“Today, Wednesday, November 9, our investigators visited the Kabras Police Station with the aim of acquiring more information and documentation which would aid the speedy conclusion of the investigation,” Makori confirmed.
She said investigators also visited Malava Sub-County Hospital where three people, including a police officer, were treated at the facility following the shooting incident.
On Monday, the family of the deceased called for thorough investigations and the institution of justice.
His parents, Henry and Grace Ndombi, said their slain son was the first born and the family’s hope as activists called for action to be taken against the officers involved in the shooting.
Makori said IPOA is committed to getting to the bottom of the matter in an impartial way.
“IPOA empathizes with the families, friends and all those aggrieved by Mr Ndombi’s death and assures that our efforts will ensure that justice prevails. Until then, IPOA calls on residents of the area to keep calm and await the outcome of the investigation,” Makori said.
