It's laughable! Azimio scorns at state's ICT scholarships

Africa-Press – Kenya. Azimio la Umoja has termed as laughable government’s offer of ICT scholarships for those who will attend next week’s Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium.

Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi said in a statement on Thursday that the offer was made to counter the now cancelled parallel Jamhuri celebrations Azimio was to hold at Jacaranda grounds.

“We have noted that out of fear of being outnumbered by the people’s dialogue forum on December 12, the UDA administration announced that it will offer free technology scholarships to all adults who will attend Jamhuri Day celebrations in person at the Nyayo stadium. It is a laughable offer,” Wandayi said.

“As usual, not thought out at all. However, we encourage Kenyans to demand the scholarships on arrival at the stadium. We need to bring to an end this emerging policy of running government through pranks.”

The government on Wednesday said it will offer the scholarships in line with Cabinet’s resolve to have themed public holidays going forward.

In its fourth meeting on Tuesday, the Cabinet said the theming of public holidays is aimed at highlighting the strides made in achieving national aspirations during such celebrations.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo said on Wednesday the Jamhuri Day festivities will be anchored on ICT in recognition of the pioneering innovations by the Kenyan youth under the theme Connect, Innovate, Inspire.

“This is a bid to make Kenya the top talent of the world and the region in the Technology and Digital Economy,” he said.

Azimio said that despite the cancellation of their parallel Jamhuri Day fete, the people’s dialogue forums will continue one way or the other in the coming days, weeks and months.

Wandayi said Kenyans who turned up in large numbers during the Kamukunji rally sent a message that they believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.

“They are ready to force the Ruto administration to address the basic needs which are the high cost of unga, fuel, electricity, school fees, bus fare and need to restore and enhance cash transfer to the elderly,” the Ugunja MP said.

He said the patriots who showed up at the rally demonstrated that they have the spirit to reclaim the country and ensure it remains alive and strong and no one is giving up any time soon.

“As things stand, the basic necessities mentioned above run as more urgent and more critical and nobody should be persuaded otherwise by scholarships that we know shall never come,” he said.
