Africa-Press – Kenya. Chess Team will be out to defend its dominance as the Mavens Open International Chess Championship gets underway at the KICC Delegates Hall this weekend.
The competition will set the stage for a high-stakes four-day contest that has drawn top regional players across multiple categories. The bankers head into the tournament riding on momentum after amassing 36 points to clinch the Best Corporate Club title in Eldoret earlier this year.
Woman FIDE Master Joyce Nyaruai, anchoring their charge, swept all six of her matches to secure the women’s crown. The run, she believes has sharpened both her form and the team’s collective resolve as they brace for stronger opposition in Nairobi.
“This tournament presents a great opportunity to sharpen our competitive edge,” Nyaruai said. He noted that facing some of the region’s strongest players will test their readiness.”
She added that the passion and determination seen across the board continue to inspire her approach to every match. Her sentiments come as the championship introduces a performance-driven incentive structure targeting local players.
Victories over Grandmasters will earn a Ksh 5,000 bounty while wins against International Masters attract Ksh 3,000. The move is expected to intensify the competitive edge across the open, ladies, and special categories.
KCB coach Benjamin Magana maintained that despite the anticipated influx of elite-titled players, the club remains firmly focused on retaining its corporate title.
He stressed that the squad’s depth and preparation put them in a strong position to deliver. “There are titles to defend and prizes to be won, but our focus is on delivering a dominant performance,” Magana said.
He expressed confidence that the team can rise above the challenge posed by Grandmasters and International Masters expected at the event. The club’s patron echoed the coach’s outlook, acknowledging the quality of opposition while backing the team’s readiness.
He set up KCB’s campaign as one defined not just by title defence but by a statement of intent against the region’s finest as the Nairobi showdown unfolds through the weekend.
