Africa-Press – Kenya. KCB RFC interim coach Andrew Amonde has challenged his side to sharpen their starts ahead of Saturday’s Kenya Cup clash against Strathmore Leos.
Amonde said slow openings in their first two matches against Impala and KCB have hindered their momentum.
“We need players to step up earlier, especially the new faces who are coming into the squad. We know they are still adapting to our structures, and there is still work to do for us to have a good all-round side,” said Amonde.
The bankers have collected a maximum of 10 points after securing bonus points in both fixtures.
“We have had a positive start to the season, but we know it’s a marathon. We can only get better, improve our various facets of play, and stay in contention to win the league at the business end of the season,” he added.
KCB last won the title in 2021 and has since endured a barren run as rivals Kabras have dominated the 15s game, winning both the Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup over the past four seasons.
Amonde believes his charges have the quality to reclaim the crown from the sugar millers.
“It’s one step at a time. I think the squad have improved and is showing their quality. Once we get to the playoffs and finals, we will be in a good position,” he said.
He expects a stern test from Strathmore, who have won their opening two matches, edging varsity rivals Blak Blad 32–30 and beating Nondies by the same margin last weekend.
“It will be a tough test. They are in good form, and we can’t underestimate them. However, I am confident that my charges can deliver a win,” said Amonde.
Elsewhere, former Impala assistant coach Joshua Katunga has left the club. Katunga joined last season alongside Louis Kisia.
His exit follows that of Kisia, who departed with several key players, including Ishmael Mokaya, Cyprian Ombwaso, Javan Otieno and Martin Oyugi, leaving the side short of depth.
Impala have suffered heavy defeats in their opening fixtures, losing 87–5 to KCB and 97–6 to last season’s runners-up Menengai Oilers.
