Africa-Press – Kenya. Soldiers from the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) have been feted for their exemplary service in restoring peace in the neighboring country of Somalia.

In a statement released on Wednesday, October 27, KDF announced that the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) had feted the Kenyan troops for their courage during the peacekeeping mission at an award ceremony held on October 26.

The Kenyan troops who were feted were the tenth consignment of soldiers that the country sent to Somalia since 2010. This was after former President Mwai Kibaki announced that the country would send troops to the country to neutralize threats paused by the Al Shabaab militia group.

“The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has awarded medals to Kenyan troops for their invaluable contribution to the ongoing peace and stabilization efforts in Somalia.”

“The contingent was awarded for executing its duties with utmost courage and professionalism amidst difficult conditions, efforts that have highly contributed to promoting security and economic growth of various sectors in Jubaland State,” read the statement.

During the award ceremony, AMISOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Diomede Ndegeya, acknowledged that the troops had made lots of sacrifices, citing the numerous challenges that the peacekeepers face while on duty.

“These medals we are awarding you here today are in recognition of your service to humanity. Wear these medals as honourable and worthy peace ambassadors of your country,” the Gen stated.

Additionally, Kenya was recognized for its continued support for the peacekeeping mission and for establishing special units to support the noble course.

“He (Lt Gen Diomede Ndegeya), also lauded the Kenyan Contingent for putting up a rapid mobile force that is critical in providing quick reaction, which is critical in conducting targeted operations to degrade Al Shabaab.”

At the event, AMISOM also launched a project to help the soldiers with therapy even as they continue to undertake the life-threatening mission.

“The Smart Farm is based on the three main thematic areas; psychotherapy role for supporting troops serving under AMISOM, promoting environmental conservation through tree growth and it is demonstration tool on modern farming methods, targeting women and the youth to empower them economically.”

On the other hand, Kenyans took to social media to laud the troops for their courage in defending the country’s borders and for being peace ambassadors for the continent.

The award ceremony event took place at the AMISOM Sector II Headquarters in Dhobley, Somalia.
