KenGen Warns Job Seekers About Impersonators

Africa-PressKenya. Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) on Friday, April 30, warned job seekers of fraudsters who are taking advantage of unsuspecting job seekers.

In a statement, KenGen warned job seekers that it did not charge any fees for recruitment.

“Our attention has been drawn to instances where individuals have impersonated KenGen Human Resource personnel with the intent of extorting,” reads the statement in part.

The power-producing company noted that available opportunities were only advertised on the dailies and the KenGen website.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen numerous Kenyans lose their sources of income through lay-offs, redundancies, business closures and wage cuts being the order of the day.

This has seen many fall prey to job scams through elaborate schemes disguised as legitimate job opportunities.

A key trend in many job scams in the country is that applicants are asked to part with certain amounts of money.

It is important to note that genuine firms and recruitment companies rarely ask applicants to part with any fees, however little, before being given the job.

Another red flag is when high salary packages are promised with little to no experience expected.

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), an estimated 1.7 million Kenyans lost their jobs in 2020, which has also resulted in a surge in individuals opting to operate small businesses and partnerships.

Kenya’s unemployment rate doubled to 10.4% in the second quarter of 2020 compared to 5.2% in the first quarter due to the pandemic, government data showed.
