Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya is at risk of missing out on the WBSC Africa U-18 Baseball5 World Cup qualifier set to be held in Cape Coast, Ghana on May 14-23. This follows the government’s failure to fund the trip citing a lack of funds.
A team of four boys and four girls were selected from various centres in the country to represent Kenya at the Cape Coast. Baseball Federation of Kenya commissioner George Kinuthia said they need at least Sh4 million to honour the qualifiers.
Kinuthia said: “We are appealing to wellwishers and corporates to help us raise a minimum of Sh4 million needed for the assignment.” “The players will also need allowances even as we target to bring the trophy home.” Kinuthia also stated that the simplicity of the game makes it easy to be integrated into the Competence-Based Curriculum.
“Baseball5 is an exciting, fast-moving game that addresses the challenges lack of open spaces within the communities since it can be played competitively in parking lots, backyards and on basketball courts,” Kinuthia said.
The game has spread to 70 countries since its inception about five years ago. Kenya are ranked third in Africa and ninth in the world following the senior team’s sterling performance at the inaugural World Championships held in Mexico in 2021.
The top two countries from the Cape Coast qualifiers will represent Africa at the first-ever WBSC Youth Baseball5 World Cup. The confederation is yet to award hosting rights for the Youth Baseball5 World Cup.
