Kenya Morans play South Sudan in pre-quarters today

Africa-PressKenya. Kenya Morans will play South Sudan on Tuesday in an epic FIBA Afro-Basket 2021 Championship pre-quarter qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda. This fierce Zone Five rivalry meeting was set after South Sudan pipped Uganda 88-86 for second position in a closely fought Group ‘D’ tie.

Earlier, Kenya were placed third in Group ‘C’ after they beat Mali 72-66 in their last preliminary round match.

The other pre-quarters pit Nigeria against Uganda, 11-time champions Angola face five-time kings Egypt and host Rwanda play Guinea.

Morans coach Liz Mills, who has turned the team into believers, said they are focused on the next match. “If they cut down on the turn overs, the prospects looks good,” she said.

The eagerly awaited tie is coming after Kenya beat South Sudan 74-68 in the zonal qualifiers played before an overflowing Nyayo gymnasium last year.

Captain Griffin Ligare was impressive after two poor games while Ronny Gombe was rock solid in the defence. Once again Kenya will rely on the ever dangerous Tylor Ongwae and Albert Odera for points.

On the other hand, South Sudanese playing in their first continental show, will rely on Mathiang Muo, Deng Acuoth, Terry Bak, Dhieu Abwok and Kuany Ngor.

The winner of this game will proceed to the quarter finals where they will meet reigning champions Tunisia who topped Group D.
