Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Police FC restored faith in their title credentials with a clinical 2-0 victory over Sofapaka FC at Vapor Grounds, Nairobi, on Thursday.
The reigning champions showed why they remain a force to be reckoned with, keeping pace with the Kenyan Premier League’s top contenders.
From the first whistle, Police, under head coach Nicholas Muyoti, dictated the tempo, controlling possession and pressing high to suffocate Sofapaka’s attacking options.
The home side struggled to create meaningful chances, leaving them vulnerable to the disciplined defending and swift transitions of the “Law Enforcers.”
The breakthrough came in the 13th minute when Kautiama finished a well-orchestrated move, highlighting the technical quality within the Police squad. In the 54th minute, Abud Omar doubled the advantage, effectively extinguishing any hope of a Sofapaka comeback and cementing Police’s dominance.
After the final whistle, a relieved but determined Muyoti praised his team’s efficiency in front of the goal.
“Overall, we played much better today, especially in the final third. This was a game we needed to win to remain relevant in the title race,” he said.
He added that the team must maintain this ruthless attitude in the coming matches if they are to challenge the league leaders.
For Sofapaka, the defeat deepened an already precarious position at the bottom of the table. Despite a major squad overhaul earlier this month that saw eleven new players integrated into the team, the 2009 champions appeared disjointed and lacked cohesion.
Head coach Abdalla Juma acknowledged the challenges ahead: “Sofapaka is wounded, but not dead. We are still fighting.” He urged fans for patience, noting that miracles cannot happen overnight when so many new players are being brought together.
Elsewhere, several key matches on Thursday reshaped the KPL standings. At Gusii Stadium in Kisii, APS Bomet secured a historic first-ever top-flight victory, defeating Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 and climbing off the bottom of the table.
At Ulinzi Sports Complex, Ulinzi Stars and Kakamega Homeboyz shared points in a 1-1 draw, while Bidco United and Mara Sugar FC played out a goalless stalemate at Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga.
Police moved to seventh with 31 points, remaining within reach of the top four. Sofapaka, meanwhile, remain rooted at 18th with 14 points, facing a daunting challenge to avoid relegation.
