Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya have landed an invite to play in the Middle East Africa (MEA) championship set for September 27- October 2 in Ghana.

The team, under the tutelage of the Kenya Rugby League Federation, will replace Morocco for the five-day championship after the North Africans pulled out due to governance issues as a result of the Covid -19 pandemic.

KRLF chairman, Richard Adhere, said the tournament will serve as an eye opener as they look forward to more international tourneys.

“It’s a great opportunity to assess the progress of Kenya Rugby League. This will help motivate players in a high-performance environment and spur the growth of the game in Kenya. It will also accord KRLF an opportunity to market and grow a brand that is still in its infancy,” added Adhere.

KRLF director of growth and development, John Mbai, said the team will be ready for the event. “We have developed a local working structure that has been designated ostensibly as a platform for players to move into the international arena as part of growing the game.

“This will also add impetus to efforts geared towards player development through clubs and make the domestic leagues more competitive.

“It will be a learning opportunity and will help empower our referees, coaches and staff on how to best run and manage the game,” added Mbai.

Kenya’s squad will be coached by former Leeds and Dewsbury player, legendary Edward Rombo.

Although the MEA championship is now a pathway to 2025 Rugby League World Cup qualification, Kenya is not eligible to proceed but intends to apply for membership.

The Kenya team was selected earlier this year from the league championship that featured the likes of Kisumu Winam, Rift Valley Ruffians, Kitengela Sharks and Wolves among others.

MEA championship regional director, Remond Safi, said It’s great to have Kenya on board at a short notice after Morocco’s exit.

He said Kenya’s involvement will increase awareness and player pathways in local activity while aiding KRLF’s objectives to fulfill their membership requirement once their first international fixtures are completed.
