Kenya to host Africa regional seminar on human rights

Africa-Press – Kenya. The United Nations Human Right Council will conduct the African regional seminar to spotlight the role development plays in promoting and protecting human rights.

The seminar will focus on particular challenges and successes in Africa.

The seminar will be conducted at the United Nations Office in Nairobi from November 24 to 25.

In a statement, the UNHRC said that among agendas to be discussed will include the contribution of regional development, especially the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Agenda 2063.

“The agenda is the contribution of the Doha Programme of Action for least developed countries and development of infrastructure and governance in the energy and digital sectors to the enjoyment of all human rights for all,” the statement read.

Speakers at the seminar include experts and representatives of several governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations.

They are Attorney General Justine Muturi, UN-Habitat deputy executive director Raf Tuts, and African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights Commissioner Litha Musyimi-Ogana.

Others are Kenya National Commission on Human Rights chairperson Roseline Odede, UN Independent Expert on foreign debt Attiya Waris and UN Independent Expert on human rights and international solidarity Obiora Okafor.

The seminar is the third in a series of five global seminars mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to look at the nexus between development and human rights.
