Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has vowed that the country will no longer import fish from other countries.

Speaking on Saturday during the homecoming ceremony of Interior PS Raymond Omollo in Homa Bay County, Ruto said that he’s not going to allow the importation as it leads to unemployment.

“Going forward, no fish is going to come from other countries. Fish will come from Lake Victoria here in Homa Bay and our youths are the ones going to be the ones running the businesses,” Ruto said.

He further said that his government has invested Sh300 million to develop a fish market in Homa Bay in order to create employment opportunities for fish farmers in the region.

The president additionally stated that the country will no longer continue to import products that are available locally, saying that the government has put in place tax measures to ensure that no fish is imported into the country.

This, he said, was the only way Kenya was going to create employment opportunities for the youth.

“We need to expand the manufacturing capacity in our country so that we can create jobs, create wealth, add value and eliminate hunger and create opportunities for the young people in our country,” Ruto said.

While speaking on the Finance Bill, he called out those who are opposing it terming them as the ones supporting the importation of fish into the country.

“Those opposing the Finance Bill want us to continue importing fish till when?” he asked.

In June while attending a prayer service in Kajiado, the President pledged to ban the importation of leather.

“In the next two years, I will ban the importation of leather products. We will start producing our own leather products,” Ruto said.

The Head of State noted that by having local manufacturing of leather products, jobs will be created.

“Even if there are jobs outside, we have to create here back at home,” Ruto said.

He emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza government has big plans for the manufacturing sector.
