Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association fell to their Russian counterparts in a friendly tournament played at Brookhouse School over the weekend.KYMCA succumbed 2-1 and 3-0 in football and volleyball respectively in a tournament dubbed ‘diplomatic derby.’
In football, Kenya trailed early through Karura MP Kamau Thuo’s own goal. Maina Karobia pulled the hosts level but Mikhail Benya hit the Europeans’ winner in added time.
The Russians also prevailed in the volleyball contest with scores 9f 21-13, 21-14 and of 21-9.
KYMCA coach Ken Babu said: “The objective is to foster stronger bilateral ties and camaraderie between the two nations.”
Russia captain Dmitrii Charnetskii expressed optimism for future encounters, emphasising the importance of exchanging ideas and building connections across borders.
Thuo, aka Fiu ni Fiu, highlighted the significance of such interactions beyond the boardrooms, emphasising the friendly and interactive nature of sports.
“Plans have been laid out to further deepen these ties through courtesy calls and expanding the tournament to regional activities, focused on engaging youth in the exchange of ideas and opportunities,” he said.
“With aspirations of expanding the tournament to include teams from all the 47 counties, the stage is set for future encounters that transcend mere competition, embodying the true essence of sports diplomacy.
The tournament served as a platform for cultural exchange and friendship, reaffirming the power of sports to transcend borders and unite nations.
