Africa-Press – Kenya. Commonwealth Games 5000m silver medallist champion Nicholas Kimeli says he is ready to lead Team Kenya to the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia on February 18 next year.
Kimeli was named in the Team Kenya to the World Championships during Saturday’s trials at Prison Staff Training College in Ruiru after finishing fifth in a race he had not expected to perform well.
The middle-distance runner revealed that he was keen on making the team but his mind changed as the race wore on. “I’m really grateful I got into the team, I did not expect to succeed since I had not done enough training,” Meli said.
Kimeli said he has already started training for Bathurst where he will be chasing a top-six finish. He said the country has a talented team and they will work as a unit.
The Commonwealth 5,000m silver medalist will be accompanied by Sebastian Kimaru (Kapsabet), Daniel Simiu (Police), Kibiwott Kandie (KDF), Emmanuel Kiprop (Golazo) and World Cross Country champion Geoffrey Kamworor (Police). Collins Koros (KDF) and Hillary Kipchirchir (Kaptagat) are in the reserves.
The senior women’s 10km race has Grace Loibach (Elgeyo Marakwet), Edinah Jebitiok (Nandi), Irene Cheptai (Elgeyo Marakwet), Agnes Jebet (Elgeyo Marakwet), Viola Chepng’eno, Emily Chebet (Bomet), Beatrice Chebet (Police) and Cynthia Chepng’eno (KDF).
The Under-20 8km contenders are Ismael Kirui (Torongo), Reynold Kipkorir (Bomet), Dennis Kipkirui (Keringet), Raphael Dabash (Njoro), Gideon Kipng’etich (Nakuru), and Charles Rotich (West Pokot) while Stephen Masinget (Ngong), and Daniel Kinyanjui (Nakuru) are the reserves.
The Under-20 6km women’s team has Faith Cherotich (Kaylet), Sheila Chebet (Iten), Joyline Chepkemoi (Lemoitit), and Nancy Cherop (Elgeyo Marakwet). Others are Marion Chepng’etich ((Elgeyo Marakwet), Diana Cherotich (Elgeyo Marakwet)and Pamela Kosgei (Elgeyo Marakwet), and Diana Chepkemoi (Lemotit) who are the reserves team Emmanuel Wanyonyi (Nandi), Daniel Munguti (KDF), Mathew Kipsang (KDF), Abel Kipsang (Police) will participate in the senior’s men 6k mixed relay.
