Kisumu RFC bolsters squad after disastrous Kenya Cup start

Africa-Press – Kenya. After a disastrous start to their Kenya Cup campaign, Kisumu RFC has bolstered the squad by signing six players in the December transfer window.

The club lost its three opening games of the season. Kisumu fell 36-12 to Nondies in the opening game of the season before losing 41-10 to KCB. In their last game of 2025, the Howard Okwemba-coached side succumbed to their third consecutive loss after going down 69-3 against Menengai Oilers.

On Thursday, the club’s secretary, Robert Wechesi, confirmed the new signings, among them former Kenya Simbas scrumhalf Dan Angwech.

Angwech joins the Bravehearts from Kenya Cup powerhouses Kabras Sugar. He returns from injury after one year on the sidelines.

Another high-profile signing is Anthony Owino from Menengai Oilers.

Others are Kassim Hamza, Derrick Ouma, Edmund Angonya, Noel Odhiambo, and Victor Wawire. He said the new players will add quality, experience, and depth to their squad.

Kisumu will start their 2026 Kenya Cup campaign on January 10 against Kabras Sugar at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mamboleo, before travelling to Nairobi for an encounter against newcomers Daystar Falcons.

The club further released Bob Onchong’a, Habil Malika, and Valentine Odoyo. Odoyo and Onchong’a are likely to join Kisii RFC. Onchong’a is also the interim Kisii RFC chairman.

He said the club has released Lenny Obiero and Walter Aiko.

“We were not very active in the mid-season transfer window. We have a young and talented squad. We want to continue with our good run as we target a playoff slot. We are aiming to return to Kenya Cup in three years,” he added.

At the same time, former Kenya Cup side South Coast Pirates have beefed up their squad by signing two players. The new signings are Cyprian Ombaso from Kenya Cup outfit Nakuru RFC and Kenya U20 backrow Iddo Kuta from Kenya Harlequins.

Further, the club confirmed the departure of winger Brighton Omondi, who has joined Kenya Harlequins. South Coast Pirates coach Tony Khadambi said the signing of the two players will add depth to the squad.

“It’s a long season, and we want to have a big squad,” said the tactician.
