KNH initiative raises 222 beds from donations

Africa-Press – Kenya. The Kenyatta National Hospital adopt-a-bed campaign has so far raised 222 beds. The latest donation of 12 beds came from the KNH Executive Management Committee Members on Thursday.

“So far we have received 222 beds from various donors and we still have a long way to go. We would like to appeal to more donors to join us as we aim to achieve the target,” KNH board chairman George Ooko said.

The campaign, which started towards the end of last year, targets to raise 2,000 beds. The adopt-a-bed campaign was initiated to provide enhanced comfort to patients during their stay in hospital.

The idea is to replace the old beds the hospitals has had for decades. A significant number of beds are obsolete and those in usable condition have limited functionalities required for the provision of specialised treatment offered in the hospital.

The hospital management said most beds at the facility were procured when the hospital was established in 1901, hence do not offer the comfort a patient requires for ease of recovery.

The specifications require that the bed should be secure, comfortable, adjustable and comes with a washable mackintosh mattress. The bed should also have adjustable side rails that will ensure safety of the patient and prevent falls.
