K’Ogalo Keeper Omondi Highlights Importance of Match

Africa-Press – Kenya. Gor Mahia FC first-choice goalkeeper Byrne Omondi has issued a warning ahead of Saturday’s clash against Sofapaka at Nyayo Stadium, insisting that only victory will do as the title race tightens at the SportPesa League summit.

In an exclusive interview, Omondi said the squad is already mentally prepared for a contest he expects to be far tougher than Sofapaka’s current league position suggests.

“We know we are prepared for the match, but we also understand it will not be easy,” Omondi said.

“Even if their form has not been good, playing against a strong team like Sofapaka is never simple. When you look at our past meetings over the years, these games are always difficult, so we must be ready in every aspect.

”Gor Mahia currently sit at the top of the table with 36 points, level with archrivals AFC Leopards but ahead on goal difference.

With the league as competitive as ever, every fixture carries title-defining weight. “Right now, every match is a must-win for us,” Omondi said. “The league is very competitive, and you cannot afford to drop points.

We are preparing with that mindset because we are going to Nyayo to win. There is no other option. ”The champions head into the weekend buoyed by a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Bidco United last Saturday at the same venue.

Paul Ochuoga’s last-gasp winner ensured Charles Akonnor’s side maintained their grip on top spot. “Winning games like the one against Bidco gives you confidence,” Omondi said.

“But it also reminds you how tight things are at the top and why you must stay focused.

”Despite Sofapaka’s struggles near the foot of the table, Omondi stressed that Gor Mahia cannot afford lapses in intensity.

“I know they are not going through the best of times right now, but matches against Sofapaka are never easy for Gor Mahia,” he said.

“Because of that history, it is very important for us to prepare well and perform at our best.

”The stakes extend beyond pride, with every point counting in the title race.

Gor Mahia will welcome left-back Geoffrey ‘Simiti’ Ochieng back from injury, although striker Felix Oluoch, the club’s top scorer with seven league goals, remains sidelined. Sofapaka, sitting 17th with 14 points, are fighting to climb out of the relegation zone.

Head coach Ezekiel Akwana is hoping to strengthen the squad with new attacking reinforcements after last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to AFC Leopards marked their 11th loss of the season.

Omondi, however, insists Gor Mahia’s focus is on themselves. “We respect Sofapaka because of who they are and what they can do, but our focus is on ourselves and what we want to achieve this season,” he said.

“We know what is at stake. That is why we are preparing properly, staying disciplined, and going into this match with one clear objective—to win.”
