Africa-Press – Kenya. The Inaugural Western Lake Victory Cup tournament semifinals scheduled for this weekend will be played under floodlights at Kisumu’s Mamboleo Stadium.

The event organizers led by Erick Ondieki said the evening matches offer ample time for players and fans to enjoy the tournament freely.

He said they are keen to host next year’s Dala sevens, the national rugby Sevens tournament under floodlights.

“Because we are hosting Dala 7’s under floodlights next year, we want to test this with the Victoria Cup,” said Ondieki.

“It is high time that we give players and fans a good opportunity to enjoy rugby. This is a city and we have to ensure that we have total rugby played. We want to have as many fans as possible after a day with the family they can come and watch the games,” said Ondiek.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) will be up against Western Bulls in a Kakamega county derby while Kenya Cup champions Kabras Sugar face hosts Kisumu RFC.

The Kenya Cup side defeated KRU championship side Eldoret 51-0 to qualify for the semifinals while Kenya Cup champions Kabras Sugar were 41-0 winners over Mbale RFC during the quarterfinals played at the MMUST ground.

Kisumu were handed a bye to semis after Kisii RFC failed to show up while Bulls got a walkover after the University of Eldoret (UOE) gave the tournament a wide berth to focus on Varsity Cup in Maseno.

MMUST head coach John Asila said the pre-season tournament is key as he prepares his team for the Kenya Cup season that kicks off on November 26.

“For us, a win was not that important. I am using this event in readiness for the upcoming Kenya Cup season,” said Asila.
