Lawyers should get facts right - Ngatia speaks on Ruto win

Africa-Press – Kenya. Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia has given his take on the hearing and the verdict of the Presidential petition that challenged the election of William Ruto as President-elect.

Speaking to the media minutes after the Supreme court upheld Ruto’s win, Ngatia said lawyers should base their arguments on facts.

He said they should be more calculative and avoid theories that cannot be backed up with evidence.

“A lawyer should know what the case is, get the facts right and have evidence, you cannot argue something with no tangible evidence,” he said.

“The correct way of appreciation law is always look for evidence, and compare the evidence against the allegation.”

Ngatia said his second take is that politicians should learn to accept defeat especially when they know their case doesn’t hold water.

“You don’t need to come to the supreme court, accept the defeat and move on,” he said.

Ngatia who was defending Ruto said it took a lot of hard work to achieve the verdict.

He commended the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for being transparent in their process.

“IEBC did a good job, they were prepared, had a portal open to all Kenyans and that portal was a game changer, as you can see nobody complained until the last day,” he said.
