Africa-Press – Kenya. Kayci Odhiambo’s 47th-minute strike proved decisive as AFC Leopards edged Sofapaka 1–0 in a hard-fought Kenyan Premier League encounter at Moi Stadium, Kasarani, on Sunday, to keep their title charge firmly on track.

The victory lifts Ingwe to second place on 36 points, level with leaders Gor Mahia, who remain top on goal difference, and keeps the title race finely balanced. Leopards’ head coach Fred Ambani praised his players’ resilience and composure after a tense contest in which clear chances were scarce.

“The boys showed great character today,” Ambani said. “We knew Sofapaka would be difficult opponents, and the way the players managed the game after halftime was very encouraging.”

Ambani highlighted the timing of Odhiambo’s goal, which came barely two minutes after the restart. “That early second-half goal changed the momentum,” he explained.

“It gave us belief and put Sofapaka on the back foot, and the team responded brilliantly.” He admitted Sofapaka had tested his side, especially in the closing stages.

“They pressed us in the final third and created dangerous moments, but we stayed disciplined and maintained our shape,” Ambani noted. “Our defenders were exceptional and gave the goalkeeper confidence to manage the backline.”

The tactician also credited tactical tweaks made at halftime. “We tightened the midfield and ensured better control of possession,” he said.

“Those adjustments helped limit their chances and protect the lead.” On the other bench, Sofapaka head coach Ezekiel Akwana lamented missed opportunities but praised his players’ effort.

“We competed well and created chances, but football is about taking your moments,” Akwana said. “Conceding right after halftime was a tough blow,” Akwana said.

His side had started strongly but struggled to break down Leopards’ defence. “They were well organised and compact at the back, which made it difficult for us to get clear shots,” he noted.

He added that the team would use the defeat as a learning experience. “We must improve our finishing and concentration in key moments,” Akwana said.

“The league is long, and we still have many matches to fight for.” The win strengthens AFC Leopards’ push for the league title and keeps the rivalry with Gor Mahia alive as the season intensifies, while Sofapaka remain in contention for a top-four finish but must turn performances into points.
