Africa-Press – Kenya. Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has urged Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka to distance himself from unpopular politicians in the Ukambani region. Mwangangi warned that continued association with such leaders risks alienating the electorate.
Speaking during a church service at Calvary Christian Church in Mutituni, Machakos County, Mwangangi said several politicians have historically aligned themselves with Kalonzo for personal political gain, only to abandon the region’s development agenda once elected.
“Leaders hide behind Kalonzo when they are seeking elective positions. But once they get into office, they forget about working for the people and focus on selfish interests,” Mwangangi told the congregation.
He added that many of these leaders were visibly active alongside Kalonzo in the lead-up to the last general elections but have since gone silent. “Where are they now? They have disappointed us too much,” he said.
In a message directed at Kalonzo—who was present at the service—Mwangangi urged the Wiper leader not to impose leaders who lack popular support in the region.
“Party leader, when you see people do not want a particular person, do not force those characters on them. Just let them be,” he emphasised.
He suggested that public resistance to certain leaders reflects deeper issues that need to be addressed through genuine engagement with the electorate.
“Because it means there is a problem that must be sorted by the wananchi,” he added.
Mwangangi further accused some politicians of attempting to destabilise Wiper in the Ukambani region by using money to bribe voters and sway public opinion.
“Money is being carried in sacks. Have we become people who are easily swayed with money?” he posed. He warned that such tactics not only undermine democracy but also insult the intelligence of voters who deserve leaders with integrity and vision.
Top opposition leaders, among them United Opposition principals Rigathi Gachagua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Justin Muturi, attended the church service. Also present were prominent Wiper figures such as Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, Kathiani MP and Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui, Senator Agnes Kavindu, Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi, and Embakasi South MP Julius Mawathe.
