Magomere: Transition, poor preseason blamed for Greensharks' troubles

Africa-Press – Kenya. Greensharks’ poor form this season in the Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier League is down to transition, coach Leon Magomere has said. Magomere, who serves as a player-coach, said the team has a lot of youngstars that are learning the ropes and playing in the top tier for the first time.

“Most of the players that joined us at the start of the season are inexperienced. The team is rebuilding and the players have taken long to bond,” Magomere said.

Greensharks are winless in seven matches so far. They have registered five losses and two draws to keep the team grounded at the bottom of the 10-team standing.

“We didn’t have a good preseason either. Few players turned up for preseason training since most of them are employed,” he added.

Greensharks are left with two matches to end the first leg. They face Strathmore Gladiators on Sunday and Magomere hopes his boys will emerge victorious.

“We have improved in the last couple of games though results haven’t gone as we wished. I am confident the boys will register their first win against Gladiators.

“Some senior most players like Samuel Mucheke and myself are forced to play to assist the juniors adapt to the rigours of playing in the Premier League,” he added.

Greensharks’ main undoing has been scoring . The team has scored a meager seven goals in as many matches. “Our attack needs to be worked on. Conversion is the biggest challenge,” he finalised.
