Africa-Press – Kenya. Thika Queens are facing a selection dilemma in goal with the emergence of teenage sensation Mishi Mbaru.
Coach Benta Achieng has been thrown into a spin with three goalkeepers at her disposal with Monica Karambu and Phiona Ariko as the other options.
Experienced Karambu, who has been the first choice, faces a fight to hold onto the position after being left out of the squad that faced Ulinzi Starlets while Ariko was on the bench deputising Mbaru. Karambu, 30, was integral in Thika’s Premier League title success last season.
The 21-year-old Mbaru is in super form after a successful loan spell with Mombasa Olympic team. Ariko, who was once called up to Harambee Starlets by former coach David Ouma, is waiting in the wings.
Queens’ chairman Fredrick Chege has challenged Karambu to fight for her position, hinting that the trio are all good and will always be selected on merit.
“Mbaru looks transformed and played well against Ulinzi on Sunday. She has proved herself in training and seized the opportunity to stake claim as undisputed first-choice,” Chege said.
“Karambu has served Thika with distinction and needs to continue playing with the same desire and motivation. This cut-throat competition for places is good for the coach because whoever will be picked will definitely perform,” he added.
Eyebrows were raised when Thika’s 18-member squad was named for duty against Ulinzi without Karambu, prompting speculations that her tenure at the club could be over. However, Chege has dismissed the assertions as mere rumours.
“Karambu is integral to our plans and she is going nowhere. She needs to remain level headed. It was tough leaving her out but all is not lost.”
Thika begin their title defence against Kayole at Thika Stadium on Saturday.
