Africa-Press – Kenya. The Ministry of Sports has supported the Billie Jean Cup ladies tennis tournament with Sh22.3million. Sports CS Ababu Namwamba on Monday flagged off the tournament by handing the cheque for the five-day competition that will be played at the Nairobi Club.
This year’s showpiece marks the 60th edition of the competition. Kenya is the first African country to host this tournament that will be graced by 12 nations, the highest number of entries ever. Namwamba pledged his support to the federation by offering a 10-acre land to develop tennis facilities.
“Our tennis federation has been voted as the best in Africa and that is a huge milestone. As a government we are glad to partner with the federation and support its work. We have offered 10 acre land for the development of world class tennis facilities,” Namwamba offered.
“Since we are turning Kasarani into an academy where different sports can be played, it will be better for tennis to also be developed there,” he added.
The CS reiterated his ministry’s commitment to support the development of talented tennis players from a young age as the country prepares Team Kenya for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. He also wished team Kenya well in the tournament and urged the players to reciprocate the support by winning.
