Africa-Press – Kenya. Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has denied claims that she has been placed in Rigathi Gachagua’s camp to spy for the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
In a statement addressed to Kenyans on Wednesday, Wamuchomba claimed that this all stemmed from her decision to condole with Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah.
After she joined fellow lawmakers to visit Ichung’wah last week, some news sites claimed that the Kikuyu MP had alluded that Wamuchomba was secretly sharing information about the opposition with the ruling party.
However, Wamuchomba has denied these allegations, urging those reporting on the same to share a video clip where Ichung’wah made those remarks.
“Hon Kimani made a speech in my presence and never mentioned or spoke about what the section of media is reporting, and even if he said anything, how credible is he? I have challenged them to produce a clip as evidence, and none has done so, though some have rendered apologies,” she stated.
“From this experience, I have been branded a traitor, a betrayer, out of my sincere act of mercy for something I didn’t say or do.”
Unapologetically, the MP confirmed that she had stood with her friend and long-time supporter, Ichung’wah’s older sister, Wandai Ichung’wah, alias Cûcû wa County, after she lost her father, revealing that she had unwittingly become a victim of compassion.
Now, she is calling the criticism a tactic to politically bully her and silence her despite her continued support for her constituents and Kenyans of all classes and backgrounds.
From championing women’s rights, advocating for victims of police brutality and opposing oppressive bills in Parliament, Wamuchomba claimed that the new attacks would not bow her and she would not be bullied into supporting political factions she did not agree with.
“I have not betrayed my people, and I will not. My resolve is clear: I will not be intimidated into supporting or joining anyone I don’t believe in. I will not join in tribal rhetoric that solves no problems for Kenyans, just for political correctness,” she declared.
“I will never praise a failed system, and neither will I cheer selfish political patrons who behave like small gods. Their money and influence are all vanity. I will continue to write history in this country. I am the woman for the job.”
After former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached in October 2024, several UDA leaders, including Wamuchomba, aligned with him and began criticising the Ruto-led administration.
More recently, however, the Githunguri MP is among the most prominent members of Kenya Moja, an emerging opposition political movement mostly made up of young parliamentarians like Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, among others.
