Africa-Press – Kenya. A section of Members of Parliament is calling on the National Police Service and other security agencies to enhance their protection following the shocking killing of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.
MP Were was shot dead along Ngong Road on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, at around 7:30 p.m. The attacker has not yet been identified, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The killing has sent shockwaves through Parliament, with many lawmakers now expressing fear for their own safety. Some MPs say they are afraid to move around freely, especially after sunset.
Homa Bay Town MP George Peter Opondo Kaluma said the murder has shaken lawmakers, who are now extra cautious about their movements.
“It is something that has scared most MPs, I can tell you. Even yesterday, members who were here (MP Were’s Karen home) feared to leave beyond dusk, as you cannot know if you are safe,” Kaluma said.
“If an MP can be killed in the manner Were was killed, who in Kenya is safe? It is something for the police to answer,” he added.
Kaluma also warned that such an incident damages Kenya’s reputation and may affect how the country is viewed globally in terms of safety.
“The casual manner in which the MP lost his life is something that can downgrade the sense of security in the country, even in the eyes of the international community,” Kaluma said.
Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi echoed Kaluma’s concerns, saying he was shocked that an MP could be shot even while accompanied by bodyguards, and in broad daylight.
“If a sitting MP can be shot when he is also with security in broad daylight. It is something that all of us collectively, even if we have as many bodyguards as we have, are worried about,” Atandi said.
The legislators now want the police and other security agencies to take urgent steps to protect elected leaders and ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
The motive behind Were’s killing remains unclear, but chilling videos have resurfaced, showing the MP openly declaring that his life was in danger and naming those he claimed wanted him dead.
