Africa-Press – Kenya. Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has promised to work with the church.
He spoke on Saturday during a drought mitigation event where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s wife Dorcas was the chief guest.
“In my government, the church will play a central role, all ward committees will have a church official. Even at budget economic forums, we want the church to play a central role,” he said.
Dorcas and Mutula Jnr flagged off relief food that is expected to be distributed to the residents of Kibwezi East, Kibwezi West and Makueni sub-counties.
The food will benefit 5,000 families and all public schools during the KCSE and KCPE exam periods.
During the event, the first-time governor gave Dorcas a fruit basket as an appreciation gift.
Mutula Jnr reiterated his commitment to mitigate drought in the area.
He said he was going to invest in mango production, pointing out that Makueni is the largest mango producer in Kenya.
At the same time, Dorcas said the national government was committed to working with the Makueni county government to end the ongoing drought.
“Our country stands at a moment of crisis, the drought we are experiencing across the nation is the longest in the last 40 years, the people of Makueni know very well how devastating this drought has been,” she said.
“The national and county governments will work hand in hand to mitigate that.”
The pastor also led the county in praying for rain.
On October 14, Dorcas in collaboration with Red Cross also held a flagging-off ceremony for relief food to drought-stricken families in Narok County.
The event was held at South C, Nairobi.
The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) said currently, 4.35 million Kenyans are in need of food aid.
The number is projected to reach 4.4 million between October and December 2022.
This is according to a UN outlook for October 2022 to January 2023 which indicated that 1.2 million people will be in the emergency phase and will need urgent support.
