Nairobi MCAs Agree to Splash Ksh 55M on Speaker's New House

Africa-PressKenya. Members of the Nairobi County Assembly have allocated Ksh55 million for the Speaker’s residence, which will be ready in 2023.

This is after the Assembly abandoned earlier plans to buy a house for the Speaker and opted to build it from scratch.

In the new agreement, the MCAs resolved to spend Ksh55 million on purchasing land and on construction.

According to reports, City Hall will spend Ksh35 million from the current financial year and another Ksh20 million in the next one to construct the new house.

The Nairobi County Annual Development Plan (CADP) report indicates that the house will be ready by 2023 with construction slated to begin its year.

“To perform final works on the official residence of the Speaker, Sh20 million will be spent on the project with the source of revenue being the County Revenue Fund,” County Finance and Economic Planning Executive Allan Igambi stated.

“The county assembly service board resolved to roll over the projects to 2021/2022 financial year.”

This comes after plans to build the Speaker a house were discarded in 2018 during the tenure of politician Beatrice Elachi who was the then office holder.

The construction of the Speaker’s residence was marred in controversy, with Elachi disputing reports that she had asked for a posh mansion located in an upmarket location that has a swimming pool in the backyard.

Elachi stated that the Speaker’s mansion was not supposed to meet her taste, but it was a government home that would be occupied by any holder of the office.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) ordered all 47 counties to stop paying rent for Governors and the Speakers from June 30, 2018, and instead construct houses for them.

County Speakers are entitled to a monthly house allowance of Ksh150,000.
