Africa-Press – Kenya. Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called for dialogue between Azimio leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto. Her remarks came just a day after the country turned chaotic during anti-government protests.

“I emphasize the need for dialogue and constructive engagement amongst our Principal coalition leaders,” Ndeti said in a tweet on Thursday. The governor condemned the violence seen during demonstrations, urging Kenyans to prioritise peace.

“I strongly condemn the violent demonstrations, destruction of property, and loss of lives that occurred yesterday and urge fellow Kenyans to prioritize peace and unity,” she said.

Ndeti noted that there are other ways through which Kenyans can express their right to demonstrate peacefully. “Kenyans have a right to picket peacefully and there are non-violent and lawful means of expressing concerns,” she said.

The governor urged everyone to refrain from violence and destruction, and instead focus on positive initiatives that promote harmony and progress. Chairperson of the Council of Governors Anne Waiguru also fiercely condemned the vandalism and destruction of properties including the Nairobi Expressway witnessed during the Wednesday demos.

The Kirinyaga Governor added that what happened on Wednesday was not demonstrations but economic sabotage. Waiguru said the demos did not achieve what was intended as protestors decried the cost of living, but rather, were counterproductive as revenue collected yesterday was less.

“I condemn in the strongest terms possible the wanton destruction of property – public and private – in the name of protesting the high cost of living,” she said.
