NOCK wants federations to plan early for 2023 events

Africa-Press – Kenya. The National Olympic Committee of Kenya NOCK wants early preparations for the seven sporting events lined up for next year.

The Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers are already ongoing while the national beach games will be staged in Mombasa in January 2023.

ANOCA Zone v Africa Youth Games, Africa Youth Games (Congo Brazaville), Africa Games (Ghana), Africa Beach Games (Tunisia), World Beach Games (Indonesia) and Youth Commonwealth Games (Trinidad and Tobago) will all be staged in a busy 2023 calendar.

The aforementioned events were confirmed at the ANOCA 2022 General Assembly meeting held a week ago and attended by NOCK-K President Paul Tergat and secretary general Francis Mutuku.

“We’re setting an example by ensuring the Chef de Mission towards Paris 2024 will be announced by the first week of December. We’re moving away from being event-based and looking at long-term preparations,” Mutuku said.

He added: “Next year will be quite busy and we must keep the fire burning to ensure our athletes are fit with eyes towards Paris 2024, LA 2028, and Brisbane 2032.”

NOCK held its upcoming games preparations meeting with federations, which was attended by presidents, secretary generals, and national coaches.

The virtual meeting was the first in a series of intended monthly meetings for various upcoming continental and international sports events before the formal appointment of the management for the different Games.

The meetings are aimed at early preparations of teams, familiarizing federations with the respective qualification pathways towards the Games, budgeting, and appointment of team managers.

Technical preparedness also, including coaches’ capacity development through continuous education and developing fitness standards for their respective sport constitute the agenda of these meetings.

First Deputy President, Shadrack Maluki noted that the meetings would be used as a platform of structured engagement for a long-term collaboration with the Government and other key stakeholders. He urged the federation’s leadership to seize the opportunity and play an active role and participation.

The monthly meetings will run alongside NOC-K’s enhanced efforts to identify and establish partnerships towards the Games to mobilize resources and promote clean sports and youth camps. The youth camp is expected to resume in December.
