Africa-Press – Kenya. The National Olympic Committee of Kenya’s electoral congress has begun this morning with the General Assembly attended by various sports federations affiliated with it.
In his opening remarks, Nock president Paul Tergat spoke of his pride at the achievements of the sports body during their four-year term, which expires today.
“Our success in the last four years has been possible because we have been able to harness our strength in unity as different sports federations. We stand with our heads held high because Nock is now a respected, dignified sports body because of the things we have achieved,” Tergat said.
The former five-time world cross country champion said that the new office will have to scale new heights in the coming four years for the better of sportspersons in Kenya.
“This has been an eventful year. We are stronger and wiser after what we have gone through this year. We need to redouble our efforts in the coming year considering it will be another busy one,” he said.
Tergat is already assured of another four-year term as Nock’s supremo after no other person expressed interest in his seat.
However, 26 other candidates will be battling to secure the available positions on offer in today’s ballot battle.
The assembly began with a minute’s silence in honour of fallen sports persons who lost their lives this year.
The meeting then proceeded after acting secretary-general Francis Mutuku established that the quorum had been met.
Football Kenya Federation and Badminton Kenya have, however, been excluded from the elections due to the disbandment of the former by the government and the suspension of the latter by the International Badminton Federation.
