Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Women’s Premier League side, Kibera Girls, are counting loses after fast-rising midfielder Lorna Nyabuto moved to Vihiga Queens.
The 20-year-old Harambee Starlets player, who played in the African Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier against South Sudan last week, has quickly established herself as a regular at club level.
Kibera coach Ramadhan Vijago termed Nyabuto’s departure a fatal blow but tipped the energetic midfielder to become a generational player only if she remains focused.
“Nyabuto will be a big loss for the team. It was a tough choice to let her leave but again moving to Vihiga is crucial for her development considering she’s only 20. She will be exposed with Vihiga due to head to Egypt for the Inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League,” the gaffer said.
“She’s a unique player rarely found in the modern day game. Nyabuto reads the game much better and her positional awareness is on another level. Technically’ she’s gifted and needs just polishing. Nyabuto needs to remain grounded if she hopes to realise her dreams.”
Nyabuto is joined at Vihiga by dynamic midfielder Merceline Wayodi from Kisumu All Starlets and Eve Chemutai who has decamped Nakuru Queens in favour of the Vihiga County sponsored side. Dorcas Neema and Christine Nafula were the first to sign their deals.
Meanwhile, Queens coach Boniface Nyamunyamu believes Vihiga have enough depth in the squad to cope with a demanding season with the Champions League, Women’s Premier League, FKF Women’s Cup competitions all to look forward to.
The Ines Mango-captained side are in camp at Kenya Institute of Special Education, Kasarani, fine-tuning their preparations for the continental showpiece.
Vihiga are expected to play one more friendly match on Saturday before departing for Egypt for the two-week assignment that starts on November 5th.
The Cecafa region representatives will have to navigate their way in a tricky pool ‘B’ that consists of three-time South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Morocco’s AS FAR and Rivers Angels of Nigeria.
“With the new players, we have a competitive squad that can help us juggle in all the competitions. I would have loved the team to arrive in Egypt two days before the competition but the management will have the final decision,” said Nyamunyamu.
