Africa-Press – Kenya. Former Impala and Strathmore Leos coach Mitch Ocholla has joined Menengai Oilers.

The former Kenya Sevens and 15s international will be the backs and defence coach at the Nakuru-based club for the forthcoming season.

Oilers head coach Gibson Weru said Ocholla brings a wealth of experience to the side having been a Kenya Sevens coach and Kenya Under 20 coach.

“Mitch has been in the game for many years and will be a big asset for us going forward as we seek to win the Kenya Cup title this season” said Weru.

Oilers qualified for the Kenya Cup semifinal last season, losing to eventual champions KCB 36-17 in the semifinals and have their sights on going all the way this time round.

The former winger left Impala in September after two seasons with the Ngong Road-based side where he guided them to an eighth-place finish in the 2021 season and a fourth place in the 2019/20 season.

This will be Ocholla’s second stint in Nakuru having guided Nakuru RFC in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons.

Ocholla made his mark at Strathmore where he won the Mwamba Cup and Eric Shirley Shield titles in 2007 as Leos were promoted to the Kenya Cup.

He won the National Sevens Circuit in 2009 and later lead the side to their first-ever Kenya Cup final in 2013.

Oliers are due to play Impala and Homeboyz in pre season friendlies on Saturday to gauge their preparedness for the start of the season. Weru said the matches will be one hour each and where all the players will be involved.

“It will be a good opportunity to test our system and strategies and see the areas we need to improve,” added Weru.

Oilers new signings Walter Ochieng, Stanley Isogol and Mohamed Omollo and John Okoth are expected to feature. The Kenya Cup season starts on November 27.
