Africa-Press – Kenya. Beldine Odemba believes she has assembled the right mix of youth and experience to give Harambee Starlets a realistic chance of making an impact at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026.
On Thursday, the head coach named a 34-player provisional squad for the final phase of preparations, with the team set to report to camp ahead of the March 17 kick-off.
The selection is not just about immediate results, but also about building a competitive and sustainable national side. Her squad features a strong blend of established internationals and a wave of talented youngsters promoted from the U20 Rising Starlets.
Eight players from the youth ranks have earned places in the provisional team, a move the coach says is part of a long-term plan. “We are looking at the bigger picture,” Odemba said.
“Integrating players from the U20 team gives us depth and continuity, and it is important for the long-term growth of the national team.
”At the same time, experienced campaigners have been recalled to provide leadership and stability within the squad.
The return of senior players is expected to create healthy competition for places while also helping the younger players adapt to the demands of senior international football.
Odemba is also drawing confidence from the domestic scouting programme that fed into the latest selection. Several players who impressed during the recent local-based mini camp have been handed provisional call-ups, reflecting the coaching staff’s focus on form and consistency.
The upcoming FIFA international window offers the technical bench a chance to fine-tune combinations and assess the squad in friendly matches before the final team is named. The balance in the current group is what gives Odemba confidence.
With energetic young players pushing for places and experienced heads guiding the team, she believes the Starlets have the right ingredients to compete and make a strong statement on their return to the continental stage.
