Over 1,500 athletes expected at Allan Chesang Half Marathon

Africa-Press – Kenya. Organisers of the inaugural Allan Chesang Half Marathon are working on modernities to accommodate over 1,500 athletes expected at Friday’s race in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

Led by Athletics Kenya Trans Nzoia County chairman Andrew Rotich, the organisers said they expect a huge turn out now that this is the last big race as the country heads into the Christmas festivities.

Rotich said experienced and upcoming athletes have an opportunity to showcase their running prowess in a county well known for producing football players.

“I am taking this opportunity to welcome all athletics lovers to Trans Nzoia on December 23. We are targeting about 1,500 athletes and the preparations are underway. We have done almost everything to make the race successful,” said Rotich.

He said the race will start at Endebbes Police Station, past Kitale Town and culminate at the Kitale Showground. “The aim of the race is to help raise awareness on the need to plant more trees in the county. As the organisers, we have plans to plant 10 million trees in the next five years,” said Rotich.

He said the planting will happen during the rainy season where they hope to engage school-going pupils and students within the county. “This race is in line with the President William Ruto’s call for Kenyans to plant trees in a move aimed at conserving the environment,” he said.

The winner in both the men and women’s races will pocket Sh150, 000, which will trickle down to the 25th finisher. “The race is not for the Trans Nzoia residents only. We are welcoming all Kenyans to come and compete on that day. In athletics, we are a family… all the way from the young to the elderly,” he said.
