Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Simbas’ coach Jerome Paarwater has asked his charges to build up on their 30-26 win over Border Bulldogs when they face Namibian side, Weltschias on Saturday in Windhoek in the Currie Cup.
Paarwater charges earned their first win of the season last weekend and the South African tactician says consistency will be key ahead of the four home matches left in the competition RFUEA ground.
“It was a good performance and it’s our first win of the campaign. However, we are not satisfied and we want more we know. Our next opponent will be tough and considering they will be playing in their backyard makes them even stronger,” he added.
The Simbas had lost their opening two matches against San Clemente Rhinos 33-22 and Eastern Province 18-7 respectively. The coach revealed that their scrum and kicking game was the biggest talking point in the win against the South African provincial side.
“Our set piece held up well. Our kicking game was magnificent and our line speed on defence was superb. We need to do the same in our attack on Saturday against Namibia,” noted Paarwater
The South African tactician said the competition in the squad is healthy and he may make a couple of changes for the encounter. “The players are putting a lot in training and picking the 23 players for Saturday will be tall order,” he added.
Skipper George Nyambua said the quality of opposition they are facing will aid in their push for the Elgon Cup and other internationals later in the year.
“As a team, we are looking at the long-term goal to be mentally and physically ready for the internationals later in the year. We also want to be ready for the World Cup qualifiers in 2026 and at the same time build depth,” added Nyambua.
The captain said the squad had set a target of winning five matches out of nine up from last year’s three wins against the same opposition. After the match against the Namibian outfit, they will face Zimbabwe Goshawks on May 20 followed by a match against Valke on May 27. They wrap up their fixtures against SWD Eagles on June 3.
