PNU renews Azimio membership; to participate in demos

Africa-Press – Kenya. The Party of National Unity (PNU) has reaffirmed its renewed membership in the Azimio la Umoja coalition. In a resolution made during a special delegates meeting held Tuesday, the party reiterated the position as it announced it will be taking part in the planned mass protests.

The anti-government demonstrations called by Azimio’s leadership are set to start Wednesday until Friday. “As you know the agreement we had lasted for six months and today, through a party resolution, we are renewing our membership,” former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya who was also reinstated as a party leader said.

Munya resigned from the party following his appointment to join retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet. “I have been reinstated as the party leader and the national executive council has mandated me to continue representing it in Azimio meetings, forums and whatever other business the coalition calls upon us,” Munya said.

Addressing the press at the party offices, Munya used the opportunity to urge Kenyans to turn out in large numbers on Wednesday for the demonstrations.

This, even as he warned the government against any attempts to stop it. “PNU supports the desires of the Kenyan people to express themselves in terms of picketing, demonstrating and organising meetings,” he said.

Therefore, “whatever is going to be happening in the next three days where Kenyans are showing displeasure on the way the economy is being run”, we fully support it.

Munya did not, however, state whether he will be leading the demos in his county. Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro recently warned that protests will not be allowed in Mt Kenya. Nyoro said as leaders from the region, they have taken a common stand that they will not allow anarchy and violence in any part of the region.

“We are not going to allow any leader to come with thugs to destroy the property and businesses of the people in Mt Kenya region…they should not mistake our silence for fear,” the MP said.

When asked about it, Munya maintained he will “actively be involved in the demos”. “We shall not tell you where and when because of those saboteurs in uniform coming to interfere with our activities,” said Munya.

The party leader at the same time condemned the withdrawal of security of Azimio leaders. He said all citizens deserve security and no one should be a friend of Kenya Kwanza to be given security. The government, he said, should instead provide security for all the leaders involved in organising the ‘activities’ to ensure they are not harmed.

“It is totally unacceptable for this government to imagine that security is a favour that can be given or withdrawn at their whims and therefore we are asking them to reinstate with immediate effect,” he stated.
