Africa-Press – Kenya. Police in Mombasa stormed a United Democratic Alliance meeting on Thursday, June 3.
Party officials had gathered at the Terrace Villas Resort, Nyali where they hosted aspirants from Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.
UDA Chairman Johnstone Muthama, Secretary General Veronica Maina were in attendance.
When the police arrived, Muthama left hurriedly.
The party has had forums with its aspirants over the past few weeks where they explain their ideologies, manifesto and constitution. Previous meetings have been in Nakuru, Meru and now Mombasa.
The police forced attendees out of the premises.
In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, attendees are seen leaving the premises adorned in UDA merchandise.
“We had taken all necessary precautions. We had masks on, sanitized and maintained social distance,” stated a supporter.
“We will use other platforms such as social media to engage with each other. We will regroup and show the country our unity,” another supporter stated.
On May 31, the police stormed another UDA meeting in Meru – claiming that the meeting was in violation of Covid-19 regulations.
The event had been arranged by Ms Maina who denied allegations that the meeting had been planned without notifying the police.
“We do not need a police permit for this. It’s not a public rally,” the UDA Secretary General indicated.
According to Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, public gatherings, processions or movement during the curfew period is not allowed. Through a gazette notice on May 30, he extended the order by a further 60 days.
