Africa-Press – Kenya. Rongo University are ready for their women’s Kenya Cup debut against Maseno University on Saturday.

The league was set to start on December 5 but was shelved due to logistical challenges.

This revamped competition introduces a two-conference format, with the top two teams from each conference progressing to the semifinals.

Rongo University’s captain Marvel Laura said their objective is to top the Western Conference.

“Our target is to finish top to qualify for the national semifinals. We are relatively inexperienced but that should not be a hindrance to our aspirations,” she said.

On their game against Maseno, Laura said: “Maseno are an experienced side. Even though we have never played against them, I believe we are ready. We want to start our campaign with a win at home on Saturday.”

Most of the Rongo University students started their rugby under Nanyuki-based Dennis Gem and Laura believes playing together since primary school would be an added advantage to them.

“Most of us have played together since primary school. We want to thank Dennis Gem for allowing us to play rugby. We have the passion, love, and determination to continue playing this game,” she said.

In another Western region game, Shamberere host Western Spears at Shamberere playground.

In the Nairobi Conference, Women’s Kenya Cup champions Mwamba will start the hunt for the title against Impala at Impala Club while Nakuru welcome Northern Suburbs at Nakuru Athletic Club.

Mwamba coach Joseph Babu said he expects a competitive league.

“We are the defending champions but we know it won’t be easy. Impala will push us as they have done for the past two seasons but we are well prepared,” said Babu.
