Africa-Press – Kenya. Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has revived calls to have a judicial commission of state capture. Speaking Sunday, Mukunji said he will be tabling a bill on the floor of the House to push for the formation of the commission to probe allegations of conflict of interest and resource monopoly in the country.
“Immediately we resume, I will sponsor a bill seeking to establish a State capture commission that will look into government affairs to ensure we do not go back to the control of a few people,” said the MP.
In an apparent reference to retired president Uhuru Kenyatta, the legislator said it is regrettable that some few individuals continue to benefit at the expense of Kenyans by monopolizing key economic sectors. Mukunji also took issue with his continued involvement in politics contrary to the law “instead of enjoying his retirement”.
“I want to tell Uhuru that his time is up. You are supposed to be enjoying retirement with your family and if anything being consulted by the current administration as a statesman who is still paid by the government,” he said.
In his manifesto, President Ruto promised to form the commission within 30 days of taking over power. But, speaking during a first media interview, Ruto said he has been forced to go slow on implementing it since he has more ‘pressing’ issues.
He said diverting his energy towards creating the commission is likely to distract him from his cause. “Our plate is full, we have to balance between sorting out the economy, which we are almost in the red, or swinging this big thing that will drain our energy. However, I want to promise you that, that story will be told,” Ruto said. The move by the MP comes following the emergence of allegations that some leaders are financing Azimio’s mass protests.
