Ruto Reaffirms Kenya's Commitment to AU Reform Agenda

Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has reiterated Kenya’s unwavering commitment to the ongoing reform of the African Union.

Ruto said the reform agenda is critical to ensuring the continental body becomes more effective, accountable and responsive to the needs of African citizens.

Speaking Friday during the inaugural virtual meeting of the Ad Hoc Oversight Committee of Heads of State and Government on AU Institutional Reforms, Ruto said the reforms will position the AU to deliver on Africa’s Agenda 2063 and address emerging challenges on the continent.

“We are committed to the reform of the African Union to ensure it becomes a more effective, accountable, and responsive institution, fit to deliver on the aspirations of Africa’s Agenda 2063 and meet the evolving challenges facing our continent,” he said.

The reforms, he noted, are designed to strengthen institutional efficiency, secure sustainable financing, streamline decision-making processes, and revitalise key AU organs such as the Pan-African Parliament and the African Court of Justice.

President Ruto emphasised that Africa must take charge of its destiny by ensuring that the AU reflects the collective will and vision of its member States.

He said a stronger AU would be better placed to respond to the continent’s governance, peace, and security challenges.

“We are also focusing on enhancing the AU’s governance, peace, and security frameworks to remain relevant amid shifting global dynamics and rising conflicts,” he remarked.

The meeting, which brought together representatives from the African Union Commission, the high-level lanel of eminent experts, and member States, reviewed progress made so far and guided the finalisation of pending reforms.

It also set out priorities ahead of the special summit on AU institutional reforms scheduled for November 26, 2025 in Luanda, Angola.

Ruto, who chaired the virtual session, commended the collaborative efforts of African leaders and experts driving the reform agenda.

This, as he called for unity of purpose and a shared vision to ensure that the AU evolves into a truly people-centred and self-sustaining institution.

The AU institutional reform agenda was first launched in 2016 to make the continental body more efficient and results-oriented.

The ongoing process seeks to reduce bureaucratic delays, enhance financial autonomy, and ensure Africa speaks with one voice on the global stage.
