Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has expressed pride in the transformative education reforms underway, describing them as the most significant since independence.

He highlighted major achievements in infrastructure, staffing, and access under the Competency-Based Education (CBE).

Speaking during the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay, Ruto revealed that 76,000 teachers have been hired over the past two years, with a further 24,000 planned by January 2026 — marking the largest teacher recruitment drive in Kenya’s history.

He also noted that more than 23,000 classrooms have been constructed to ease overcrowding and facilitate the smooth rollout of CBE.

“As we build the nation, we are preparing Kenyan learners to thrive in a complex and competitive world,” Ruto said, underscoring the shift towards practical skills and a future-ready mindset.

The CBC, prioritising skills over memorisation, follows recommendations from the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform.

At tertiary level, Ruto highlighted a student-focused funding model that provides up to 90 per cent government scholarships for disadvantaged students, making higher education more accessible.

To address youth unemployment and skills gaps, enrolment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges is set to increase from 500,000 in 2023 to 2 million by 2025.

“This bold investment in education is vital for Kenya’s industrialisation, innovation, and economic growth,” the President said.
