Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has launched the National Youth Opportunity Towards Advancement (NYOTA) project, a Sh20 billion initiative aimed at empowering young Kenyans through skills training, business support, and job creation.
Speaking during the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations, Ruto said the government, in partnership with the World Bank, will target over 800,000 youth aged 18–29, and up to 35 for those with disabilities.
“As part of our financial empowerment programme for those at the base of the economy, NYOTA will enhance employability through training, work experience, recognition of prior learning, entrepreneurship, and a savings culture,” he said.
NYOTA is anchored on the Hustler Fund platform and has attracted over 1 million business support applicants.
At least 70 youth per ward will benefit from grants, business training, and market access.
By August, 100,000 youth will each receive Sh50,000 in seed capital, with the government allocating Sh5 billion to support their ventures.
Ruto also announced the national rollout of the Climate Worx programme, which will create jobs for over 110,000 youth in all 47 counties. Initially piloted in Nairobi’s informal settlements, the initiative will now cover the entire country.
“Climate Worx is structured as a social protection programme. Youth will be engaged in projects such as roadworks, tree planting, and environmental sanitation,” Ruto said.
He added: “This is more than a paycheck. It is a bridge to future opportunities—whether in business, education, or long-term employment.”
The President also announced that the government will soon propose a law to Parliament allowing contributors to the Housing Levy to access affordable home loans of up to Sh5 million.
He said the new facility will be offered at single-digit interest rates and will be available for the purchase of any housing unit in the market.
