Africa-Press – Kenya. The government is set to launch 42, 000 new housing units by the end of December, Housing and Urban Development principal Secretary Charles Hinga has disclosed.

This, Hinga said, is apart from the 56 other projects lined up across the country.

Hinga said the new unit, to be unveiled by President William Ruto, are being implemented under the affordable housing programme (AHP).

The new units, Hinga stated, are spread across the counties of Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos.

He said the lands where the houses will be put up have already been identified with other enabling facilities as water and electricity also having been availed.

“We are ready to go and we are making it a reality,” he said at the KICC on Wednesday.

About 30,000 units, he noted, are set to be put at Makongeni in Nairobi on the land owned by Kenya Railways.

“On December 6, the President shall be doing groundbreaking for the construction of the houses in the area,” he remarked.

Hinga was speaking during the launch of the second affordable housing conference in Nairobi.

The three-day conference is being organised by the Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company (KMRC) and the ministry of housing and urban development.

In Starehe, 2,420 units will be put up with the developer having been identified.

“The developer is ready to commence works and we have asked people staying in the land to vacate quietly,” he said.

Shauri Moyo B, he noted, will have 1,728 housing units while at Ruiru in Kiambu 1,200 units are to be put up.

In Machakos, 25 acres of land has been set for construction of 5,360 units.

Private developers have been sourced to fund the projects, he said.
