Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto will not be attending the 2nd Russia-Africa summit happening at St Petersburg from Thursday.

In a statement, Statehouse spokesman Hussein Mohammed said Ruto will instead be represented by “organs of the Africa Union”.

The decision to skip the conference bringing together heads of states from the continent, Mohammed said, is line with an agreement reached by the continental heads.

“The decision aligns with the stance of African Heads of State and Government, who believe that in order for Africa to engage in meaningful discussions with global partners, partnership summits organized by external parties need to be reviewed to establish an effective framework for African Union partnerships,” reads the statement.

Russia said Tuesday that 49 of 54 African countries have confirmed attendance.

There will be numerous bilateral meetings to be discussed during the meeting to be chaired President Vladimir Putin who plans to meet with every leader of African states.
