Shabana match against MCF fails to take off due to heavy rains

Africa-Press – Kenya. The National Super League game between log leaders Shabana and Mully Children’s Family (MCF) failed to take off at Gusii Stadium on Tuesday after heavy rains left the playground waterlogged.

The heavy rains, which started pounding Kisii town from 1 pm to 2.30 pm made the ground unplayable, forcing match commissioner Fred Wafula to postpone the game to Wednesday morning.

“We have decided the game be played on Wednesday at 10 am because every effort to clear the water has failed. Efforts to secure an alternative field also failed,” said Wafula.

MCF coach David Mahira said: “For us, we were ready to play the game but clearly the stadium is unplayable and we are okay with the postponement. You can’t blame Shabana for the heavy downpour.”

Mahira, who played for Shabana in his heydays, congratulated the team for making a comeback to the Kenya Premier League. “It’s good the team is back to the KPL. We need more community clubs playing in the top-tier league,” added the tactician.

“We wanted to play this game today so that we focus on our game against Murang’a Seal. However, the rains are beyond our control. My game plan remains the same and I’m going for three points,” said a frustrated Shabana coach Sammy Okoth.

Questions have been raised over the suitability of the stadium to host KPL games because of the poor drainage and lack of an inner perimeter wall.

Kisii Governor Simba Arati promised to re-do the drainage and construct the perimeter wall before the league kicks off in August.

In other matches scheduled for Wednesday, second-placed Murang’a Seals will be up against Kibera Black Stars at Ligi Ndogo grounds while playoff hopefuls fourth-placed Mara Sugar will host Vihiga United at Awendo Green Stadium in Migori County.

Coastal Heroes will entertain Kajiado FC at Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa while Mwatate United will host Mombasa Elite at Wundanyi Stadium in Taita.

At Camp Toyoyo, Naivas will be up against SS Assad while Gusii FC will clash with Darajani Gogo at Gusii Stadium.
