Africa-Press – Kenya. Six teams have confirmed participation in the 2022 KHU Masters hockey tournament Series 3 scheduled for November 5 in Nakuru.
Among the teams that have confirmed participation are Mvita XI, Daikyo Heroes, Mombasa Sports Club, Mombasa West, Mombasa, Blue Ocean Chiefs and Swans. Mombasa Sports Club will field teams in both men’s and women’s cadre.
“Some teams have not yet confirmed their participation. The confirmation deadline is on Sunday,”
The organisers, Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Nakuru county branch, through the communication office said Technical University of Mombasa, Pwani University, and Kenya coast national polytechnic as well as junior clubs in the leagues are yet to confirm.
Over35 years in the women’s category and over 40years in the men’s category will be the age group best suited to participate in the KHU masters tournament.
This follows a survey series conducted before the series 1 masters tournament which did not qualify Kenya as being able to have a critical mass of different age groups for the tournament.
The first series was hosted by the Nairobi County Hockey Association in July 2022, with Impala Veterans winning the title and the second series was hosted at the Mombasa Sports Club with Nakuru masters as the champions.
The KHU Masters tournament was first introduced in October 2010 by Kenya Hockey Union but took a three-and-a-half-year halt in 2019 due to covid-19 outbreak.
Jacob Githinji, NHC Communication Officer says the team is determined to acquire an international masters team to participate in the world’s Masters Hockey Tournament as well as give retired hockey players a chance to showcase their talents.
“Our main agenda is to bring back old hockey spirit into the hockey community,” said Githinji.
